About Friends of STARTTS

Friends of STARTTS (FOS) is a charity and volunteer organisation that supports the work of STARTTS. Its members are passionate about refugee issues.

Since its beginnings in 1992 FOS has been:

  • Raising awareness about STARTTS and refugees in Australia
  • Raising funds for work with torture and trauma survivors
  • Increasing the broader community’s understanding of torture and trauma issues, and
  • Supporting STARTTS’ services with volunteer workers.

FOS’ work is generously supported by its patrons, Justice Michael Kirby, Katherine Greiner and Helena Carr.

Friends of STARTTS Activities:

Some examples of the work Friends of STARTTS supports are:

  • A camp for adolescents in Coffs Harbour
  • Volunteer bus driver project
  • English Classes
  • Radio project for young people from the countries of the former Yugoslavia
  • Dance project with primary school children

At the moment FOS is :

  • Organising a cultural festival including a refugee art exhibition and humanitarian awards evening
  • Organising a Treasure Hunt to raise money for STARTTS’ services
  • Raising funds to support a human rights conference in Peru
  • Supporting a refugee conference to be held at the end of the year.

Friends of STARTTS Awareness and Fundraising Program

Awareness and fundraising are key activities for FOS.

Some examples of how you can help include:

  • Organising events such as a treasure hunt or refugee cultural celebration
  • Coming up with ideas for fundraising
  • Helping approach businesses for sponsorship

  • Writing for Refugee Transitions or other publications.

Joining Friends of STARTTS

You can help STARTTS by becoming a member of Friends of STARTTS.

As a Friend of STARTTS you can

  • Join a network of volunteers working directly with refugees,
  • Help raise funds for STARTTS
  • Help raise awareness about STARTTS and refugee issues

  • Become a member in name only and learn about

Some volunteers with FOS must undergo a criminal record and/or Working With Children Check. To find out more about this please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Felix Ryan on 02 9794 1900.

Friends of STARTTS Management Committee

Friends of STARTTS is governed by a Management Committee. The Management Committee meets once a month on Monday evenings.

The Management Committee directs FOS activities for the year.

Members are elected once a year at the Annual General Meeting. If you are interested in becoming a member please complete this FOS Management Committee Membership Application form.
