Refugee Ball 2012
The annual STARTTS Refugee Ball was held on the 17th of October 2012 and was a great success, cementing the Ball’s reputation as one of the most anticipated events on the social calendar for those interested in refugee issues.
Once again we broke our attendance records, with 340 guests enjoying a night of entertainment and inspiration. Our keynote speaker, Dr David Corlett, spoke of the many challenges facing refugees and how we can work to address these.
All funds raised on the night will be put towards STARTTS’ Capoeira Angola project working with refugee young people. Two teachers, Elisabeth Pickering and Angelina Bea, spoke about how their students have benefitted from the project, while Capoeira participant Evelyn moved many in the room to tears with her inspiring account of how Capoeira has changed her life.
$22,000 was raised on the night, all of which will go towards to Capoeira Angola project at STARTTS.
Mesmerising Iranian music by Persian Fusion, infectious Latin grooves from Oscar Jimenez and a huge prize pool of charity auction and raffle items rounded out an amazing evening of entertainment.
Thanks again to all our amazing sponsors, volunteers and guests for making the evening unforgettable, and we hope to see you back in 2013!
…a fantastic night that ran seamlessly with excellent speakers, wonderful entertainment, great auction, delicious food and wine and great company… you gave us a great insight into the wonderful work STARTTS does… it will be very hard to top next year!
Thanks for yesterday’s fabulous event. We all really enjoyed ourselves and wanted to congratulate the crew at STARTTS for pulling off a great night. The prizes, entertainment and guest speakers were great!
