Dr Ansuya Naguran

Dr. Ansuya Naguran is an academic and community development practitioner from Durban, South Africa. Ansuya’s research and community development expertise lie within the field of Social Capital. Her community development practice has focused on using theatre as a tool for social cohesion, community building and as a catalyst for anti-oppression focused action with marginalized communities.  Ansuya has facilitated theatre programs and conducted research mainly within the South African prison and residential child and youth care settings. She has also co-facilitated theatre-based anti-racism programs in the USA.

Currently in the position of Community Development Evaluation Officer at the Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS), Ansuya’s work focuses on the impact of STARTTS’ Community Development programs on Social Capital within refugee communities in New South Wales. Ansuya holds a Ph.D. in Applied Theatre from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

STARTTS aims to be a safe place for all people and cultures. We work alongside people with expansive sexualities, genders and bodies with refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds to celebrate the diverse and rich lives of individuals and communities.
