Professor Nicholas Procter
Professor Nicholas Procter RN, BA, Grad Dip Adult Ed, MBA, PhD is Chair: Mental Health Nursing and leader of the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Research and Education Group, UniSA Clinical and Health Sciences.
He is currently Australia’s national representative to the International Association for Suicide Prevention (until 2023) and has held senior independent advisory roles, including to the Office of the Prime Minister’s National Suicide Prevention Adviser, National Suicide Prevention Taskforce 2019-2020, and to the Ministers Council for Asylum Seekers and Detention 2009-2018. He is a former member of the Steering Committee of the Commonwealth Ombudsman’s Own Motion Investigation into Suicide and Self Harm across the Australian Immigration Detention Network.
Professor Procter has longstanding interests in refugee and asylum seeker mental health and suicidality and has published extensively on these topics. He recently led a national targeted suicide prevention program for NGO sector workers supporting asylum seekers and refugees in the Australian community, including those whose application for refugee status has been negatively finally determined.
