STARTTS’ Impact on the Global AVP Project

The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) is a global program dedicated to teaching skills in nonviolent conflict resolution and peaceful problem-solving. Founded in the 1970s, AVP originated in the United States prison system and has since expanded to over 50 countries, offering workshops that equip individuals of all ages and backgrounds to handle violent situations in a constructive and peaceful manner. AVP workshops are built on principles of respect, mutual care, and personal empowerment, proving to be an effective tool in building stronger and more cohesive communities.
STARTTS’ journey with AVP began in 2011, and since then, this collaboration has allowed our workshops to grow in diversity and reach, attracting participants from various cultural backgrounds.
We are incredibly proud to share that our team members, including Mariano J. Coello, Jasmina Bajraktarevic-Hayward, Ansuya Naguran, Kit Bibby and Shakeh Momartin, have contributed to a book that promises to make a significant impact: “Building Peace and Community: The Alternatives to Violence Project Around the World.”
This book is a powerful compilation of stories and insights that showcase how AVP has positively influenced communities across the globe, including our own.
Chapter 18, “An Evaluation of AVP with Refugee Communities in Sydney, Australia,” is a testament to the transformative impact of the collaborative work we have undertaken with AVP NSW.
Through personal stories and in-depth analysis, this chapter showcases how these programs have equipped refugees with the tools to navigate challenges, manage conflict non-violently, and foster a sense of trust and community.
