Refugee Ball 2011

The 3rd Annual Refugee Ball last November was a huge success with more than 320 guests enjoying the celebrations, making this year’s Refugee Ball the biggest and best yet.

Once again Dockside at Cockle Bay Wharf played host to a wide variety of guests ranging from politicians, advocates, volunteers, refugee community leaders and other supporters, who all enjoyed performances, entertainment and a gourmet three-course meal.

The evening was ably MC’d by award-winning comedian David Smiedt, while well-respected mental health expert and 2010 Australian of the Year Professor Patrick McGorry spoke of the devastating effects of immigration detention on mental health. Riz Wakil complemented Professor McGorry’s remarks by poignantly reflecting on his own experience in Curtin detention centre.

Entertainment on the night was provided by the Ethiopian Gospel Choir and the Tibetan Cultural Performance Group, while Merenia and the Way got the guests up and dancing to Latin grooves until the late hours of the evening.

More than $10,000 was raised on the night, all of which will go towards STARTTS programs to support refugees. We look forward to doing it all again in 2012, and hope to see you all there!

STARTTS and Friends of STARTTS would sincerely like to thank our hard working volunteers as well as table sponsors, prize sponsors and of course guests, for making the Refugee Ball a huge success again in 2011.
