Child Protection in the Context of Refugee Trauma and Resettlement

This half day workshop aims to put a framework of understanding around the complexity of experiences and challenges that children and families from refugee backgrounds face in the context of torture, refugee trauma and resettlement. It explores the nuances of the intersection of these factors with culture and cultural transition in the new society, and how to sensitively assess the risks and need for child protection interventions. There will be a strong focus on working with children and families using refugee trauma informed and culturally safe practices.

  • Refugees, persecution and organised violence
  • Experiences of refugee families
  • Parenting across cultures
  • Impact of refugee trauma on children and attachment
  • Impact of torture and refugee trauma on parenting and family dynamics
  • The complex challenges of resettlement
  • Risk factors that may lead to families getting involved with child protection services
  • Barriers to disclosure and service uptake
  • Culturally sensitive child protection assessment checklist

Relevant to anyone working with children and families from refugee backgrounds.

Virtual workshop – Delivered via Zoom

Dates: No dates currently planned. Note that the 13 September 2022 workshop is cancelled due to the trainer no longer being available.

Payment of the registration fee is online by credit card and a receipt/confirmation will be automatically emailed to you. An administration fee of $30 applies to all cancellations made more than 14 days the day before the start of the event. Registration once paid cannot be cancelled 14 days or less the day before the start of the event, regardless of personal circumstances. Registration can be transferred to another delegate only if STARTTS is informed of the name change. Registration cannot be transferred to another workshop. The concession price is for full-time students, seniors and the unemployed. A photocopy or pdf of a valid concession card must be forwarded to the STARTTS training team upon registration. Registrations will not be confirmed until full payment is received. The deadlines for the early bird and standard prices cannot be extended. This workshop is available upon request. Please go to the ‘Request Training page for further information about workshop fees and how to make a request for your workplace. Please note that requests need to be made and confirmed at least 6-8 weeks in advance as we do get booked up.

A certificate for the half-day workshop will be emailed after the event to attendees who signed in via Zoom. For workshops delivered by request in your workplace, a certificate for the workshop can be emailed to the participants after the event if the organisation supplies an Excel sheet with the First Name, Last Name and Email address of every participant listed.

CPD hours = 3.5 (for the half-day workshop)
