The STARTTS Refugee Ball
What will the 2017 Refugee Ball raise money for?
The money raised at the Refugee Ball helps fund some of the most vital and innovative projects that support people from refugee backgrounds in NSW. This year all funds raised will go towards the ‘Refugee University Scholarship Program’.
This is the first time we will be raising funds for a vital non STARTTS project. Asylum seekers in NSW do not have access to university unless they pay large international student rates. In addition, many asylum seekers are not allowed to work which makes attending university impossible. University degrees are of paramount importance when it comes to empowering refugee communities, building self-esteem, enabling people from refugee backgrounds to give back, and increase education levels for the next generation.
Since the government policy was introduced, the ‘Refugee University Scholarship Program’ has identified children from refugee backgrounds that excel at year 12 level, and worked with universities to create and find funding for scholarships. By supporting this year’s Refugee Ball, you will be helping many children from refugee backgrounds gain access to university, overcome disadvantage and rebuild their lives.
